Christina’s snowbird grandparents made their pilgrimage south a little earlier than normal this year, somehow aligning with “THE” weekend weather-wise on the Chesapeake. Warm enough to cruise without curtains but cool enough to not perspire in no-wake zones, this Saturday was spectacular out on the Bay. With that, we used this (likely) last day of summer to it’s full potential.
Captain and Crew arrived to the docks late Saturday morning, quickly getting underway at exactly noon, apparently having the same plans as several other boats headed out of the marina to enjoy the day. We quickly met-up with a bunch of boats headed south through Kent Narrows, signifigantly below wake-zone speed thanks to a pair of sailboats doing 3-knots through the narrow pass.

We split our final destination into two chunks, planning to hit Lowes Wharf first to consume beverages and finger-food while overlooking the Bay. Although busy, Lowes had more than enough beach-front tables to accommodate Christina’s crew after their Zodiac shuttle service transported all to dry land. It didn’t take us long to grab a table with prompt food and drinks from a pretty friendly staff who moved rapidly between many waterfront tables while a great local band (Blues DeVille) played recognizable songs with their own flair.
A few beverages later, everyone re-boarded the Rose, then set-sail for dinner in Cambridge, heading south around Tilghman Island, MD.
Being too-spectacular a day out on the water, we opted to just keep cruising through Cambridge, en-route for the Suicide Bridge Restaurant in Hurlock, MD. Located on the Cabin Creek, just off the Choptank River, this great little restaurant was another 8-miles outside of Cambridge.

Our cruise home was under darkness, driving the entire 47.8nm home on high-alert while scanning the horizon and the radar over our 2.25-hour run (averaging around 21-knots under a perfect moonless night). Possibly the last major outing of the season as the weather, the Bay, and her rivers couldn’t have been any more perfect from launch to tie-up.
Another flawless outing for the Rose, her engines running like a finely-tuned top the entire 97.1nm cruise. Happy Wakes! Feel free to drop me a note anytime, ChristinaRose@edickent.com
